Cannabis

Headache is one of the major public health concerns. Besides its enormous individual and social costs, this condition can lead to decreased quality of life and disability. Severe than just a headache, migraines cause pulsing sensations and throbbing pain on one or both sides of the head. Normally accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and severe sensitivity to sound and light, migraines can last for hours to days.

While there are many treatment options for headaches and migraines, less than 50% of headache and migraine sufferers experience relief. This warrants an exploration of additional treatment options for headaches and migraines.

If your headache or migraine isn’t getting better with over-the-counter medicines, there’s one option that you might want to explore – medical cannabis. Aside from helping to ease the symptoms, studies indicate that medical cannabis might help prevent headaches and migraines from flaring up in the first place.

California Medical Cannabis Laws

The question that you’re probably asking yourself is – is marijuana even legal in California? Well, cannabis is legal in the state for adults 21 and older, as well as for medical patients who are 18 years and above.

Medicinal and Adult-Use Cannabis Regulation and Safety Act, California grants a legal exception to criminal prosecution for those who, at the suggestion of a doctor, use cannabis to treat a serious medical condition. A doctor may prescribe cannabis in case:

· The illness you’re suffering from substantially limits your ability to perform one or more major life activities as defined in the Americans with Disabilities Act.

· If not alleviated, the illness may cause serious harm to your safety or physical or mental health.

Under California law, therefore, patients who meet certain requirements can obtain and use cannabis legally with a licensed physician’s recommendation. If you’re suffering from a severe headache or migraine that is causing you a lot of distress or is preventing you from leading a quality life, you need to get a cannabis prescription sooner rather than later.

Getting a Medical Marijuana ID Card in 5 Steps

Assuming that what you’re suffering from is a qualifying medical condition, there are several steps that you must take to get cannabis to treat your headache or migraine pain in California. They include:

1.Review any additional requirements or restrictions

Even if you are of legal age and are suffering from a medical condition that merits medical cannabis, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you will get a medical marijuana card just like there. Certain aspects may prevent you from obtaining a cannabis medical card.

For instance, if you are a firefighter, correctional officer, or police officer on duty, you are restricted from using medical marijuana for the simple reason that you could put yourself and others in danger. Therefore, be sure that your line of work exempts you from any additional requirements or restrictions.

2.Gather your proof of residency

Before applying for your medical marijuana ID card, you’ll need to gather all the paperwork you need to prove that you are a resident of California. At a minimum, this will include proof of residency and identification.

3. Get a licensed physician certification

Just like most states, California also requires you to have a signed statement from a licensed physician that you are a qualifying candidate for medical cannabis use. If your physician concurs that medical cannabis is a good treatment option for you, ask them to write a letter or fill a medical cannabis recommendation letter for you.

4. Apply for your medical marijuana identity card

As with many states, California allows patients to apply for a medical marijuana ID card online. You should fill in the Application/Renewal Form with pertinent information and upload all relevant documents, including your proof of identity, proof of residence, and a copy of your medical recommendation.

After filling in your application form and uploading relevant documents, you need to submit the completed application form with the required documents to your county program in person. At the office, they will take your photo, which will appear on your medical marijuana identity card.

5. Pay the applicable fees.

While at the county program office, you will be required to pay an amount not exceeding $100 for your card. If you are a Medi-Cal beneficiary, you will receive a 50% reduction in the application fee. If you are an indigent patient who is eligible for and participating in the County Medical Services program, then you will not be required to pay even a single dollar.
