Cocoa has a temporary moratorium on medical marijuana treatment facilities, and is considering a permanent ban, according to Assistant City Manager Matthew Fuhrer.

“City Council provided direction to prepare an ordinance to ban medical marijuana dispensaries,” Fuhrer said. “Essentially, there will be a forthcoming ordinance for City Council consideration to formally ban them.”

• Cocoa Beach has one site approved by the city for a medical marijuana dispensing facility, in a small plaza on Dixie Lane, north of Ron Jon Surf Shop. But such a facility has not opened there, according to City Manager Jim McKnight.

Subsequently, a moratorium was approved that would prevent the approval of additional sites until at least January, he said. The moratorium does not affect the site that already was approved.
