WHAT IS LOUR GEHRIG’S DIEASE (ALS)?
Lou Gehrig’s Disease is also known as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). The condition got its name from a former Yankees baseball player, Henry Louis “Lou” Gehrig, who retired from baseball in 1939 after his performance began to suffer from this medical condition. Although this disease is rare, Gehrig developed this progressive and fatal neurological disorder, which eventually killed him only two years after he retired from baseball.
ALS causes motor neurons in the brain and in the spinal cord to degenerate and eventually die. As a result, the muscles that rely on proper nerve function begin to degenerate, which causes muscle spasms, stiffness, considerable pain, and chronic inflammation.
COMMON SYMPTOMS OF ALS
- Muscle weakness
- Tripping, dropping things, clumsiness
- Fatigue
- Stiff muscles
- Loss of muscles
- Speech impairments
